Robotic Nation

In the Article Robotic Nation by Marshall Brain the main topic or subject of matter is the fact that the United States is slowly progressing the robotic technologies to do everything for us, and his point is that we will slowly progress into losing are jobs to robots by the year 2055 because of things advancing so fast.
In the article he talks about how in a single day he bought everything using a machine he first went to BJ’s and bought a few items using their self checkout then he went on to go to Home Depot where he bought some more items using the self checkouts, and finally he went to McDonalds and bought all of his food using a kiosk. All of these tools we have created are taking away the amount of physical labor us humans have to do.
He further goes into deeper things about how fast the technologies of the future are advancing to say that everything and all jobs will be taken over by robots from flying a plane to working in the factories and checking you out at a register in a store. The fact of the matter is that people think it is not possible but he talks about how in 1900 people thought flying would never happen and then in 1903 it did, he then goes on to state that by 1954 a jumbo plane flying 550 mph carrying a 70,000 pound loud was flying through the air. This just goes to show us that technology is able to advance faster then we can sometimes imagine.

Marshall Brian goes on further in the article to tell us about Moore’s Law which states that CPU power doubles every 18 to 24 months or so, this shows us how the computers become so obsolete so very fast. He then talks to us about how he thinks that the unemployment rate in America will rise to an all new high of 50% because of the robots being able to do so many of the daily jobs we complete today.
Finally he talks about how he thinks that their will be an invention of a new type of work for humans to do and that they will all be able to eventually get a job and progress into the future, but he isn’t quite sure of what this new job may be.

Ethnography

The Customers I have seen shopping at the Home Depot that I work at all seem to do the same thing when they first come into the store and that is to find a person with an orange apron and indirectly ask them to hold there hand all the way to the item that they are looking for. Then another famous thing for the customers to do is they come up to my register and they all tell me that I have the wrong price on an item in which they then go on to tell me to wait and I get some one from the department to go over to the item location with them and they then come back and tell me that they had the wrong price.

The customers who shop at home depot are all there to find what they want and get out as fast as they can which I don’t blame them but most don’t use commonsense to find what they need like a lot of the customers will ask me where the batteries are located when I am standing at the register with a big battery display in front of it. Others come and tell you sent them to the wrong aisle to find what they are looking for, then you go onto walk them into the aisle and show them exactly where the item is.

I have now observed these people for 6 months because I work at home depot and I have compiled these thoughts because I see them almost 4 to 5 days a week and they all come in and do the same thing. I feel that the customers have slowly began to be babied because when we have store meetings they just tell us to say yes and never say no to the customers and I find this to be a false following because some customers get away with some crazy things like getting markdowns on things like a damaged box that goes around the item because they complain enough. This is what I mean about how the managers have slowly began to baby the customers and I think they need to learn to say no to some people because they are just getting to soft on people when they shouldn’t.

Personal Essay

Soccer State Championships
It was the beginning of June 2005 and it was a hot sunny day out when I was driving up to UMASS Amherst with my dad for the Massachusetts state championships for youth soccer. The car ride was filled with all kinds of emotions because I was nervous and my dad couldn’t wait because he already had the thoughts of victory going through his head, so he was talking strategy for how I should compile my movements on the field. Once we first got there we checked into the hotel that we were staying at with the rest of my team, so of course I was excited because I was only 16 years old and I got to stay in a hotel with all of my close friends.
It was late when arrived at the hotel so I didn’t really get to see my friends much because we had to go to bed, this was due to are first game being at eight o’clock in the morning the next day. When It was morning my dad was ready to go because he woke me up and made me eat a good breakfast so that I would be ready to go, once we had breakfast we drove to the field with the rest of my soccer team and we were ready to go because it was game time now and we wanted to win because we came in second place the year before. So the game had begun and we were pumped because that’s how we like to come on to the field you go, go, go till you have no more then you go some more. So by half time of the game we were already up 2 to nothing which is a good lead at half time in soccer because you don’t score that much. Finally its over and we had won are first game so we got are pre game jitters out and we were now more relaxed and ready to have some fun in between are games because are next game wasn’t till 3 o’clock in the afternoon so most of us just hung around the soccer fields watching other games and who we were going to play next so see if we could get any ideas on who we should look out for on the other teams.
Once it was game time again my team all met up again and were ready to go and ready to win we carried a positive air every where we traveled because we knew what we were here for and we had are minds set on victory. Once the game had started it felt like it had already ended because of how much we controlled the tempo of the game and we had one are second game which gave us a great feeling because now we were done for the day and we were going back to the hotel to relax and have some fun till the next day where we had game three. Once we got to the hotel we went and swam in the pool and just kind of relaxed because we knew we had such a big day tomorrow.
Finally it was game day when it reached the next day we were ready to go and ready we were due to how are last to games had played into the history book. The game was still important and we couldn’t let the over confidence get to are heads and blow up are egos that’s what coach liked to tell us not to let happen. The main idea was for us to go out and play like it was the championship game every game because we had nothing to lose and everything to gain so we went out at 150 percent every minute of every quarter in that game until finally we won it. We were now moving on to the playoffs which was very exciting for are team because we had made it back to where we were the year before except this time we wanted to win it more then ever.

The playoffs were awesome because we had won both of the games and we did it with such ease that you would think we were a smooth oiled machine that could not be stopped. Once we reached the final game we had all jokes aside and my team became very focused on winning and winning only because we had come so close the year before but lost it in the final seconds, so this year it meant a lot to my team and are parents who had supported us and done so much for us. The game finally began and we finally had met are match this team was very good and came close to scoring on my team many time but are goalie was doing a great job at blocking these hard shots.
It was now half time and the score was zero to zero and we didn’t want to lose so we were tired and it was extremely hot out as if we had just walked through the desert but we had the mind set and the will power to keep on trucking along like that fine oiled machine. So what we did was we went onto the field in the second half and we drove the ball down field over and over until finally in the last five minutes in the second half we scored one right in the top corner of the net and believe me when I say my team went crazy and the fans went crazy because once we scored the game was over and we had finally done it won the State Championships. We were the first team From Dartmouth to Win a state championship and we were proud and so excited and that is why it was one of my most memorable achievements.

Personal Essay

When it came to the topic i was going to choose for my personal essay i thought back on some of the highlights that have happened in the 18 years of my life. So there was a lot, but i could see a single thing that stood out to me the most which was when i won the soccer state championship in 2005 with my soccer team from Dartmouth.
